For the second consecutive summer and the second time in team history, the American Legion team has captured the Canton Women’s Softball League title after knocking off Angelo’s Pizza in the best-of-three final series.

This year, the Legion team swept the series, winning the first game 19-10 and then clinching the title with an 11-10 victory in extra innings in game two.

Head coach and player Erin Costello said the team showed great flexibility and depth in a season in which three players were out due to pregnancies.

“Positions had to be switched around and everyone adapted perfectly,” said Costello. “Shirley Sullivan and Lindsey Allison were an all-star team on the mound and at the plate. Danielle Pinnetti, normally an infielder, looked right at home in left field. Together with the rest of the team, the defense was impeccable.”

Costello said all of the players made huge strides at the plate. Melissa McNamara, Jenna Olem, Lauren Machado, Allison, and Jill Tracy all hit their first homeruns, while Keri Kravetz, Megan Noyes, and Erin Costello hit back-to-back homeruns. Costello said the most improved hitter was Courtney Robinson, who had several clutch hits throughout the season.

Halfway Cafe leads men’s softball championship series

The battle for the Canton Men’s Softball League championship continued last week between Halfway Cafe and Hannington’s, with Halfway taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven final series following a 17-8 win on Friday, September 6.

Last year, Hannington’s took home the title after outlasting Halfway in an epic series that lasted all seven games and produced a total of 220 runs scored.

This season the two rivals finished tied atop the standings with identical records of 18-1. Halfway Cafe then won a one-game playoff to finish as the regular season champion.

The back-and-forth final series was set to resume on Monday, September 9, followed by a game seven (if necessary) on Wednesday, September 11.
