Volleyball starts strong with back-to-back W’s
By Jay TurnerAfter nearly achieving perfection in a memorable and dominant 2012 campaign, the Canton High varsity volleyball team made its return to the court and already looked to be in midseason form, sweeping both North Attleboro and Attleboro last week to open the season at 2-0.
On Monday, September 9, the Canton girls traveled to NA, where they outlasted the Red Rocketeers — last year’s Kelly-Rex Division champions — in straight sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-21).
All three sets were close, but the Bulldogs were able to keep their composure and pull out the win behind the offense of senior captain Avery Devoe (21 kills) and the defense of junior Danielle Arthur (15 digs).
Other top contributors for Canton included junior setter Erin Proctor, who had 34 assists, sophomore outside hitter Elizabeth Hamilton, who played great defense and added eight timely kills, and senior outside hitter Ellie Teague.
Later in the week, the Bulldogs used a total-team effort to outlast Attleboro in their home opener, winning again in straight sets (25-18, 25-6, 25-21).
“The entire Canton squad contributed to this win,” remarked veteran head coach Pat Cawley. “Avery again led us in kills, while Erin and senior setter Meghan Hartnett did a good job distributing the ball. Sophomore outside hitter Olivia Devoe and junior outside hitter Kim Frazier played well at the net. Senior defensive specialist Shay Connolly served well and played great defense.”
The Bulldogs are coming off their greatest individual season in program history — one that saw the squad go 22-1 with 13 shutouts while capturing their first-ever sectional championship. Expectations are once again sky-high for the perennial Hockomock power, which boasts plenty of talent despite returning just one starter (Avery Devoe) from last year’s team.
This week, the girls were due to travel to Franklin on Monday and will next host Milford on Thursday (today) at 5:15 p.m.
