CHS golfers cruise past Milford, Attleboro
By Mike BergerThe Canton High golf team improved to 4-2 last week, bolstered by the strong play of the juniors as well as senior Sage Lee, who has cracked the starting lineup as a lady golfer.
The team lost to Franklin 166-156 but rebounded with wins over Milford (149-176) and Attleboro (154-180).
Franklin’s familiarity with its home course paid dividends for the Panthers last Wednesday. Par at Franklin Country Club is 35 and Sam Riemer had the lowest score on the day for the Bulldogs with a 38. The next lowest scorer for Canton was Brian Halloran with a 42, followed by Mike Breviglia and Luke Thompson with a 43.
“Our team played well, but Franklin has a great team this year and played better than us on their home course,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “[Riemer] played very well for us.”
In the Milford match played at Blue Hill Country Club, Canton broke 150 for the first time in many years behind Breviglia, Halloran and Thompson, who each shot a 37. Lee rounded out the top four with a score of 38.
“It was a great bounce-back win for the team after falling to Franklin the day before,” noted Barucci. “It’s rare to see a team score below 150. It was a huge accomplishment for our team.”
On Friday the Bulldogs hosted Attleboro, and Halloran led the way with a 36 as Canton won its second straight at home. Breviglia and Thompson each scored a 39 while Lee shot a 40.
“We were without Sam Riemer, one of our top golfers, but the juniors stepped up again and played extremely well,” said Barucci. “Sage also did well for us in her second home match of the year. Her strong play has earned her a starting spot on the roster for the upcoming matches next week.”
Canton was due to play Milford on Monday at Hopedale Country Club and Stoughton on Tuesday at Easton Country Club. The team gets backs to action today at home against North Attleboro.
