Non-native turtles dumped in Reservoir Pond
By Mike BergerThe Canton Police Department and Animal Control Officer Nadya Branca are asking the public’s help with any information about the dumping of at least 150 red-eared slider turtles into Reservoir Pond the weekend of September 21-22.
The Canton Animal Control office, the Animal Rescue League, the state Environmental Police, and the Mass. Division of Fisheries and Wildlife are working on a joint investigation.
The turtles are native to the southern United States and northern Mexico and are therefore accustomed to a warm climate.
Branca reportedly recovered 100 dead turtles and rescued 50 live turtles during the weekend of September 21-22. She found additional turtles, both live and dead, in a follow-up patrol of Reservoir Pond last week.
The Fire Department has assisted Branca in the recovery of the turtles. Anyone who has information should contact the Animal Control office at 781-575-6507.
