Trailside Museum to host Fall Fest Oct. 12-14
By Canton CitizenExplore all things autumn at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum’s Fall Festival on Columbus Day weekend, October 12-14.
Fall is a time of tremendous change in the natural world. Millions of birds, from swallows to eagles, begin a southbound journey that will take some of them beyond the edges of the continent. Researchers at the museum trap, band, and release some of the migrating hawks and falcons to gain vital conservation information. Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to meet some of these birds, discover the research being done, and possibly see a hawk being released.
Fall is a time of harvest. To celebrate the delicious apple flavor of the Blue Hills’ agricultural history, visitors can help grind and press the fall’s glut of ripe apples and turn the fruit into a drinkable treat. Several of the apple varieties that will be pressed are locally developed heirloom varieties.
Fall holidays are a time for remembering. While most of us build memories with family and friends on Thanksgiving, Columbus Day sparks a different set of memories for Native Americans. Wampanoag artist and historian Darrel Wixon will appear at the museum on Columbus Day to share his culture’s take on the European settlement of America. Wixon will also demonstrate the craft of turning seashells into wampum beads and how he uses this traditional material to create modern jewelry.
Fall Festival will feature many other family-friendly activities, from building a bird feeder to shopping the museum’s annual yard sale. Special exhibits at the festival will explore nature’s fall transitions. Live animal programs featuring native wildlife will be offered throughout the day. Vendors will be on site with a selection of snacks and treats.
The festival runs October 12-14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for members and $7 for non-members. For more information, call 617-333-0690 or go to www.massaudubon.org/bluehills.
