Field hockey team overtakes Davenport with win vs. OA

It was a banner week for the CHS field hockey team last week as the Bulldogs ran their winning streak to nine in a row while surging into first place with road victories over Oliver Ames and Sharon.

Canton is now 11-1-3 overall and can clinch another Davenport Division title with wins this week over Foxboro and Stoughton.

Last Tuesday, the girls traveled to Easton, where they exacted revenge for their lone loss, beating OA 1-0 on their home turf.

The two teams had gone into the game with identical league records, but the Tigers had owned the tiebreaker courtesy of their 1-0 win last month at CHS.

But this time Canton came out on top, riding a second-half goal from senior Katie Kelleher, who scored on a nice pass from Lindsey Nolte.

OA actually found the net twice throughout the game, but both goals were called back due to technical violations off of penalty corners.

Head coach Fior Griffin said the first of the two no-goals served as a “wake-up call” and snapped the Bulldogs out of an early-game funk. From there they played very well, she said, and they stepped up in key moments defensively while goalie Emily Buckley protected the net, finishing with five saves.

“We still have some things to work on before tournament,” said Griffin, “but it was definitely nice to come away with the win.”

Later in the week, the Bulldogs traveled to Sharon and dominated the Eagles 5-1 behind a hat trick from senior captain Kellie Stigas, who also had two assists.

Griffin said Stigas set the tone right away, scoring within the first minute of the game. “We talked about being consistent from game to game,” she said, “and that was a game where Kellie’s leadership really stood out. I thought she played great.”

Also scoring goals for the Bulldogs were junior Mary McNeil and senior Alex Dillon.

The Bulldogs will now look to finish strong this week with home games against Stoughton today at 7 p.m. and Westwood tomorrow at 3 p.m.
