Firefighters respond to Sarnafil fire
By Mike BergerSixteen firefighters, including some who were off duty at the time, and a crew from Stoughton responded to an equipment fire at Sika Sarnafil, located at 100 Dan Road, in the early morning hours on Saturday, October 26. Fire Lt. Donnie Lester said firefighters arrived shortly before 5 a.m. and found heavy smoke at the rear of the building. The building was evacuated, but no one was hurt and the damage was contained to the equipment inside the building. The Norwood Fire Department covered the main station. Lester said the cause is still undetermined.
Dry conditions lead to brush fire on Kensington Dr.
The recent dry conditions led to a small brush fire in the woods behind Kensington Drive on Friday, October 25. Fire Lt. Donnie Lester said firefighters responded around 2:30 p.m. and found grass and logs on fire in the woods. Lester said the dry conditions are prime for potential brush fires and should exist until a good rainfall, which is expected later in the week.
Police warn residents about National Grid payment scam
The Canton Police Department is warning residents about a recent telephone scam in which a person claiming to represent National Grid calls customers and demands payment or else their utilities will be shut off. The caller instructs people to go to a convenience store to obtain a prepaid card. Police said Canton residents and businesses have received this call and some have fallen victim to the scam.
Past break-ins reported to police
Canton police are investigating a pair of attempted break-ins that occurred over the weekend at Crowell’s Market on Washington Street and Route 138 and the pro shop at Brookmeadow Country Club off Walpole Street. Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen said nothing was taken in either break-in. The incident at Crowell’s occurred around 3:45 a.m. on Monday, October 28, and it appears the intruder tried to get in through the roof. Canines traced the scent to the rear of the building but lost the scent thereafter. The second incident was reported by golf course officials, who indicated that a suspicious car had been seen in the parking lot Sunday night.
