On November 26, 2013, Charlie and Mary Stevenson will celebrate a major milestone: their 75th wedding anniversary. Charlie, a member of the Canton High School Hall of Fame and the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame, quarterbacked CHS from 1929 to 1931, amassing 25 wins and only two losses. He was at the helm for Canton’s first undefeated season (9-0) in 1930 as the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 241-13. Charlie went on to coach CHS from 1943 to 1956. He also went to work for the Boston unemployment office as an assistant director for 38 years while Mary went to work for the Canton High School cafeteria, serving as the manager for over 20 years.
Charlie met Mary at the Roseland Dance Hall in Taunton, and as Charlie told MAC, the Canton and Stoughton boys traveled to Roseland while the Mansfield and Easton girls also went to the famous dance hall, which still exists today. Mary was from Mansfield. After they got married on November 26, 1938, the couple lived in Canton and raised four children: Joan, Elizabeth, Carol Ann, and Charlie Jr. Charlie and Mary are now the proud grandparents of nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Charlie, 99, and Mary, 97, will celebrate their diamond anniversary (75 years) with a family dinner and lots of memories. Congratulations from MAC.

Talking about the American Legion, on Veterans Day, November 11, there was a rededication ceremony held for the World War I monument at the Walk of Honor at the Canton Corner Cemetery. The monument was originally dedicated in 1926 at the front of the old Canton High School, now the Hemenway Senior Center, on Washington Street. Thanks to Veterans Agent Tony Andreotti and the American Legion, the monument was restored to its original luster.
Canton Athletic Director Danny Erickson has given permission to the “Friends of Billy Cravens” to sell merchandise at Memorial Field on Thanksgiving Day. A table will also be set up outside the American Legion on Thanksgiving morning selling Billy Cravens merchandise as people enter and exit the game. The fundraiser is being organized in an effort to help Cravens, a former Bulldog great who is currently battling ALS.
On Veterans Day, November 11, Prestige Car Wash at 925 Turnpike Street in Canton gave out free car washes to all veterans, a $9 value. MAC took advantage of the offer.

Gerald Elovitz, better know as Jerry Ellis, blamed the closing on the recent U.S. recession and online retailers as well as a lack of cash. His stores will be missed by his many faithful shoppers.
