Young CHS gymnasts still searching for 1st win
By Jay TurnerA combination of injuries and inexperience have led to some early growing pains for the Canton High gymnastics team, which fell to 0-2 after Saturday’s 138.3-117.9 loss to King Philip Regional at the Metro South Gymnastics Academy.
While the Bulldog gymnasts have been working hard and continue to get better, they are currently without two of their top all-around performers, sophomore Stephanie Milne and freshman Julia Burkowsky, who are both out with season-ending injuries.
“With these two girls out for the season the team is not as strong, but they are doing their best,” acknowledged head coach Carla King, adding that the team has “come a long way since the beginning of the season.”
Freshman Cassie Loftus has done a nice job in the all-arounds, particularly on floor and beam. Fellow freshman Kehla Minkin has also shown promise as an all-around.
Against KP last week, Loftus tied for second on the beam with an 8.9 while posting team-high scores on vault (8.2) and floor (8.7). Other top performers for Canton included Minkin on vault (8.0), Danielle Arthur on bars, and Rachel Leibovitz on floor.
The team was due to return to action this week with a home meet against North Attleboro on Tuesday, followed by an away meet on Saturday, January 18, against Attleboro.
