The Canton Lions Club will be sponsoring a celebrity hockey game between the Boston Black and Gold Legends (former Boston Bruins hockey players) and the Canton All-Stars on Friday, February 7, starting at 7 p.m. at the Canton skating rink located at 2167 Washington Street. Admission is free. There will also be a raffle of a hockey stick autographed by all of the Boston Bruins alumni. The Canton Lions will be raising money to support the Canton High School Scholarship Fund, Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech, Perkins School for the Blind, eye research, and other Lions’ charities. There will be an opportunity to get autographs and photos with the former Bruins players. So you and your family should attend to enjoy the game while supporting a very worthy cause. If you can’t make it to the game, you can mail a donation check payable to the Canton Lions Club, P.O. Box 121, Canton, MA 02021.
In the past month, two car operators have made a “drive through” of the Canton Corner Cemetery wall at the corner of Randolph and Washington streets. One driver took out a steel gate and part of the stone wall while the other plowed right through the stone wall.
The former X’s and O’s Restaurant on Route 138 in Stoughton has been sold to a restaurateur from West Roxbury who owns Sofia’s Italian Steakhouse on Route 1 on the Dedham/West Roxbury line.
If you would like to do something for Canton by running for a town office in the upcoming April 8 town election, you can pick up your nomination papers at the town clerk’s office beginning at 9 a.m. on January 27 through February 14 at 5 p.m. You must file your papers with at least 50 signatures of Canton registered voters no later than February 18 at 7 p.m.
A question will also appear on the ballot this year to see if the town will vote that the Community Preservation Act, as accepted by the town, be amended by adopting a section exempting $100,000 of the value of each taxable parcel of Class 3 commercial property and Class 4 industrial property, as defined by state laws.
Now that the year has come to an end, it soon will be time to file your 2013 income tax returns, and the Associated Press says the Internal Revenue Service is going to increase the number of returns it will audit by 10 percent. The statistics recently released show that wealthy taxpayers are most likely to be targeted.
When school is in session, MAC often eats lunch at the Chateau de Bleu at the Blue Hills Regional High School, and he suggests you give it a try. The menu changes daily, and whatever they serve, it is excellent and very reasonably priced, with most dinners under $6.
MAC joins others in extending a special town-wide thank you to the town of Canton’s Uniformed Funeral Honor Guard under Canton Veterans Agent Tony Andreotti, which provides military honors at funerals of Canton veterans. Organized in 2002, over the past 12 years, the Honor Guard has performed either at the graveside or at the church of 511 veterans whose families have been very appreciative.
With the end of 2013, we find that home heating oil prices are now averaging over $4 per gallon. Let’s hope these increases stop soon.
Canton native Alison Quinn is leading the Saint Anselm women’s hockey team in scoring. The freshman recently earned ECAC Women’s East Rookie of the Week honors. The 2013 Athlete of the Year at Southfield School had a pair of goals in victories over Trinity and Williams.
In case you missed it, the U.S. Postal Service delivered a surprise Christmas present that landed them on MAC’s naughty list as it announced a “temporary $.03 price increase on first-class stamps.” The increase from $.46 to $.49 cents a letter will take effect on January 26 and will last no more than two years. The Postal Service reportedly lost $5 billion last fiscal year.
Some good news: The state match for the Community Preservation Act (CPA) will increase from 26.64 percent to 52.23 percent. The state recently announced the sizable increase in the matching funds it provides to municipalities (including the town of Canton) that have accepted the CPA.
Finally, the Canton High School Alumni Association will hold its Annual Pasta Social on Saturday, January 25, at the Canton Town Club from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friends, classmates, and family are welcome to attend. Admission is only $10 per person. The alumni will also hold a raffle, with the winner receiving four Red Sox tickets, 11 rows behind first base. For more information, call 781-341-0935.
We should certainly count our blessings, but we should also make our blessings count.
This is all for now folks. See you next week.
