Man facing charge for leaving dog unattended

By

A Braintree man is facing an animal cruelty charge after his dog was found in Canton last week leashed in the back of a truck with no food or water.

While patrolling Route 138 after midnight on Saturday, January 18, Officer Ryan Sceviour spotted the dog, a large Malamute, in a box truck parked in a lot at Auto Express Way, located at 1095 Turnpike Street. The rear door of the truck was open and illuminated. The officer found the dog leashed in 29-degree weather and saw urine on the floor of the truck. Sceviour checked with the upstairs tenants of the building and determined that the owner of the truck was 31-year-old Ting Chen. Animal Control Officer Nadya Branca was also notified.

Lt. Patty Sherrill said Chen was given two options by police: take the dog home or the dog would be placed under custody. The owner agreed to take the dog home and will be summoned to court to face charges of cruelty to an animal.

Lt. Sherrill praised the work of Officer Sceviour, a CHS graduate and one of the newest members of the department. She said the officer showed great self-initiative in deciding to check the truck.
