Girls’ track ends regular season on high note
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls’ indoor track team closed out the regular season with an impressive 54.66-39.33 win over Foxboro last week to finish at 3-2 overall.
“It’s unusual to win a meet by more than 15 points when you only win five of the 11 events,” remarked head coach Dan Ashman after the meet. “But we were able to sweep three events and took second and third places in almost every race.”
Senior Rachel Campagna won three events for Canton: the 55-meter dash (8.06 seconds), 300 meters (45.55 seconds), and long jump (14’10”). Senior Amanda Eagles won the two-mile (12:36.04) and qualified for states, and sophomore Samantha Koplik won the 55-meter hurdles at 9.98 seconds.
The boys’ team fell to the Warriors 61-32 and ended the regular season at 1-4. Junior Kenny Ofonagoro won the 55 meters (7.01 seconds) and the long jump (17’9.5”). Junior Liam Collins won the mile in 4:49.25, just missing a state-qualifying time, and senior Joe Clancy won the two-mile in 11:17.69.
The boys’ 4×400 relay team won and qualified for states with a time of 3:44.92. Team members included senior Matt Derbin, junior Timmy Gutowski, Collins, and sophomore Patrick Hession.
Both teams are now preparing for the league meet this Saturday, February 1.
