Canton swimmers solid at Hock championships

By

Both CHS swim teams gave it their all at the recent Hockomock League championship meet in Milford, and it showed in their performances as several Bulldog swimmers delivered personal-best times.

In the team competition, the girls had the better showing, placing seventh out of 12 schools on Saturday. The boys, meanwhile, swam a day earlier and finished 10th overall.

“Where swimming is both an individual and team sport, recognizing their individual successes is an important piece,” noted head coach Lori Mooney. “They train hard all season and, yes, work as a team to win meets, but they also have individual goals to beat their fastest times. The Hockomock meet is the place for that, and the number of kids that did meet their goal is really exciting to see.”

The highlight for both teams came in the relay events, especially the 200-yard freestyle relay. On the girls’ side, the team of Kim Frazier, Julia Guerini, Tiffany Ha and Emilee Mercuri took home second place, and the same four finished seventh in the 200 IM relay. The boys also came up big in both events, with a fifth place finish for Sean Mitchell, Dan Nadeau, Diego Ferstler and Owen Guerini in the 200 free relay, and an eighth place finish for Ferstler, Mitchell, Kevin Wing and Sam Reimer in the 200 IM.

Individually, Ha had the best performance of any Canton swimmer, placing fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a state-qualifying time of 1:06.69. She will also be competing at states in the 200 IM and had a strong showing in that event as well, finishing sixth with a time of 2:28.60.

Other top performers for the girls included Frazier, who placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 10th in the 100 free; Mercuri, who placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke; and Guerini, who finished 10th in the 200 free and 11th in the 500 free.

For the boys, highlights included an eighth place finish by Mitchell in the 100 breaststroke and a ninth place finish by the 400 free relay team of Anthony Maffie, Nadeau, Reimer and Wing. Mitchell also swam competitively in the 200 IM, as did Ferstler in both the 50 free and the 100 backstroke.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams were set to wrap up the regular season this week with a home meet against Stoughton on Wednesday. A few of the swimmers will then head to sectionals on Sunday, February 9, with the state meet to follow on Sunday, February 16.
