Girls’ hoop team ‘thinks pink’ on senior night

Despite another tough stretch of losses, the CHS girls’ basketball team still gave its fans plenty to cheer about last week as the girls gave it their all on the court while raising hundreds of dollars for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund through the Play4Kay initiative.

think pinkThe nationwide fundraising initiative has raised millions for women’s cancer research in honor of Kay Yow, a former collegiate women’s basketball coach who passed away in 2009 after her third bout with breast cancer.

On Friday, February 14, the Bulldogs did their part in this effort by hosting a “think pink” fundraiser on senior night in the CHS gym. They wore pink socks, pink shoelaces and specially designed pink warm-up shirts. Their opponent, the Foxboro Warriors, also took part, as did the Canton fans, who helped turn the gym into a “sea of pink.”

“It was wild — the whole gym was pink,” marveled head coach Jim Choquette. “Our freshman coach, Jessica Dineen, really spearheaded the whole thing. She deserves all the credit for making it happen. It was outstanding.”

Choquette said the girls raised about $500 in all through a bake sale and the sale of “think pink” shirts.

As for the game itself, the Bulldogs did their best to win one for the seniors but ultimately came up short against a tough Warriors team, falling 52-33.

Senior Kellie Stigas, who was honored prior to the game along with team captain Caitlyn Hathaway and Alana Carrington, scored a career-high 13 points for Canton in the loss.

In other team news, junior captain Gabby Kenefick was named an All-Hockomock League honorable mention and was also selected to participate in a three-point shooting contest sponsored by Hockomocksports.com.

Choquette said that both of his junior captains — Kenefick and Eileen Khoury — have really stepped up their game over the past few weeks and both have developed into outstanding leaders while also carrying much of the scoring load.

Meanwhile, team spirit remains at an all-time high. “I think the excitement level for our program is through the roof,” said Choquette. “Despite our record, the girls really bring it every day. Seriously, you would think they’re in a playoff hunt the way that they practice.”

The Bulldogs had one more chance to make it into the win column with an away game this Tuesday against Blue Hills Regional. Their cross-town rivals were undefeated going into the contest, but Canton played them tough earlier this season in a 49-43 loss.
