CFD seeks emergency funding to cover OT costs

By

Fire Chief Charlie Doody informed selectmen Tuesday night that he may need as much as $180,000 to cover overtime for the rest of the fiscal year because of four injured firefighters. Doody said three firefighters may be out for an extended period of time and another may return by the end of the fiscal year.

Doody said he has spent 90 percent of the allotted overtime funds, and if he does nothing he will run out of overtime money by April 1. He said his only other recourse is to cut manning from 11 to nine firefighters per shift and take an ambulance out of service. Selectmen said they do not want to cut services and agreed to make a request to the Finance Committee for emergency funding.

Salvatori told Doody that he has done everything he can to mitigate expenses. “It’s like snow and ice,” Doody added. “You can’t predict what will happen. You can’t predict who will be hurt and for how long.”

Free CO detectors still available

The Fire Department still has 14 free carbon monoxide detectors and will install them at no charge. Fire Lt. Donald Lester said the recent news of a CO leak in a New York mall and a Maine hotel shows the importance of having a working detector. If interested, call Lt. Lester at 575-6654, ext. 114 to arrange for the installation. In other news, Fire Chief Charlie Doody said the Fire Department and the Council on Aging has just taken a delivery of 30 fire safety devices that will be installed in homes with hearing-impaired residents.
