Police recover drugs after suspect swallows evidence
By Mike BergerCanton police officers and detectives combined to make a drug arrest in the downtown area on Friday, February 21, around 5 p.m. Police arrested Julio Angel Rivera, 45, of Roxbury and charged him with possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance (cocaine) and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
While detectives were attempting to make the arrest, the suspect began swallowing multiple small bags that appeared to contain cocaine. Detectives obtained a search warrant for the ingested substance, and the suspect was transported to Norwood Hospital, where he remained in custody until the evidence was recovered. Rivera was arraigned Monday afternoon and released to the Dedham House of Correction.

Inaugural ‘Fire & Ice’ event a big success
Both Fire Chief Charlie Doody and Police Chief Ken Berkowitz reported that the Fire & Ice event held at the Galvin Middle School during school vacation week was a huge success and they are planning to bring it back next year. The event was sponsored by the Canton Substance Abuse Coalition, which is led by the two chiefs and School Superintendent Jeff Granatino.
Over 100 middle school students turned out for the event, which featured sledding, snow dodge ball, hot chocolate, and music.
The coalition would like to thank Michael Carville, franchise owner of the Dunkin Donuts at 22 Washington Street, who donated hot chocolate and cookies; the DPW for setting up the bonfire; and CHS volunteers Sam Hrubec, Derek Haas, McKenzie Brown, Griffin Jerrier, Ben Berkowitz, Michael Ong, and Catherine Doody. Members of the Police, Fire, and School departments all contributed to the planning and execution of the event.
