Police Dept. issues reminder about littering law
By Mike BergerThe Canton Police Department announced on its Facebook page that it plans to enforce the littering law, which includes throwing a lit cigarette out a car window. According to police, littering on a state highway is a criminal offense, subject to fines of up to $15,000 and the seizure of one’s vehicle.
One such offender will be summoned to court for throwing a lit cigarette onto Route 138 early Friday, March 7, around 1:30 a.m. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the suspect was also verbally abusive to the officer who stopped the vehicle.
Internet safety seminar a success
Thirty parents attended an internet safety seminar hosted by the Canton Police Department’s Family Services Unit on March 3 at the library. Topics discussed included the risks involved with improper Internet usage, current trends and prevention tips. Sergeant Charles Rae said he thought the event went well and was an overall success. “I was pleasantly surprised at the number of parents of elementary aged students and the quantity of thoughtful questions,” he said. “Parents came away with a heightened level of awareness with a focus on prevention.”
Rae said the Family Services Unit plans to host another session or two before the end of the school year. The unit has also received requests for another session of “notMYkid” (a drug awareness program) as well as a distracted driving session for both students and parents.
