Herr Foundation increases funding for fitness center
By Canton CitizenThe Scott M. Herr Memorial Foundation is proud to announce that it will be vastly increasing the amount of funding that it is currently providing to the Scott Herr Fitness Center at Canton High School.
According to CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson, the increased funding will be used to maintain the equipment and support the operations of the center, which is named in memory of the late Scott Herr, a former three-sport athlete and honors student who died tragically in an automobile accident in January 2010.
Scott’s parents, Joe and Linda Herr, established the foundation in his honor shortly after his passing, and the community’s continued generosity — through events such as the Scott Herr Memorial Floor Hockey Tournament — has enabled the Herrs to provide dozens of scholarships to deserving CHS graduating seniors over the past five years.
The foundation has also been a proud supporter of the fitness center, which is located across from the school’s library/media center and features an impressive selection of new and refurbished workout machines. Much of the seed money for the project, in fact, came from an anonymous $50,000 donation that the Herrs decided to put toward the creation of the facility, which officially opened to students and staff in the winter of 2011.
At the time, Joe Herr called it a “great tribute to a great young man,” which is a sentiment shared by Erickson more than three years later.
“The Scott Herr Center has been incredibly beneficial to all students at CHS,” said Erickson. “Our athletic teams use it regularly. Our boys’ hockey team — Scott’s pride and joy — has really embraced the room as a home and a place to honor Scott. This increased funding will really help us keep the room properly managed and keep the equipment properly serviced. It is great news.”
