Busy weekend for Canton Police, Fire

A 36-year-old Canton man is facing a long list of charges after leading police on a car chase shortly after midnight on Sunday, March 23. Michael Fernandes of Oakdale Road was charged with six counts of failure to stop or yield, OUI (third offense), reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, speeding, and failure to stop for a police officer. Police Lt. Patty Sherrill said an officer spotted the suspect driving through a stop sign at Beatty and Chapman streets, and when the officer tried to pull him over, he sped up and went through several stop signs along Cedarcrest Road before hitting a chain link fence at the Blue Hill Country Club. The man was not hurt in the crash, according to police.
Canton man seriously hurt in ATV flip-over
An unidentified Indian Lane resident was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for serious back and hip injuries suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Sunday, March 23, off Industrial Drive. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the accident scene at 5:25 p.m. and found the ATV flipped over on the male victim. Firefighters placed the victim on a medical board and trekked half a mile to an awaiting ambulance.
Also on Sunday, four Canton firefighters responded to a mutual aid call for a house fire in Milton. Firefighters believe the fire was started by the careless disposal of ashes in a fireplace.
West Roxbury man charged with drug possession
A 29-year-old West Roxbury man was arrested and charged with drug possession Friday afternoon following a routine traffic stop on Randolph Street. Nicholas Vacca was charged with six counts of possession of a class B substance, possession of a class D (marijuana), and speeding in violation of a special regulation. Police Lt. Patty Sherrill said the suspect also had an outstanding warrant from the West Roxbury Police Department.
Fire Dept. warns of dangerous pond conditions
Canton Fire Prevention Officer Lt. Donald Lester is urging all residents to stay off the ice in the wake of an incident last weekend in Foxboro in which three people had to be rescued after falling into the freezing waters of the Neponset Reservoir. Lester said the recent fluctuating temperatures have made the ice very dangerous. He strongly advised people to stay off all ponds and waterways.
CPD has new mobile operations cruisers
Police recently announced the arrival of new mobile operations cruisers with subdued graphics. The new vehicles will supplement the patrol division with traffic enforcement, escorts, and other specialized tasks.
