MacPhail, George R.
By Canton CitizenGeorge R. MacPhail Jr., 88, of Canton, passed away April 1 at the Harrington House in Walpole.
Born and raised in Dorchester, George graduated from English High School. Corporal MacPhail enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving overseas during World War II on the SS Black. George and his wife, Frances, moved to Canton in 1948. Mr. MacPhail worked as a warehouse foreman for the Quincy Market in Boston for many years before retiring in 1987.
He was a member and past commander of the American Legion Post #24 and previously was a coach for Canton Youth Football. George served as both an auxiliary police officer and a special police officer in Canton and worked on the grounds of Canton Corner Cemetery, where he was responsible for installing the bricks at the Cemetery Walk of Honor.
Beloved husband of the late Frances E. (Hiltz). Loving father of Linda H. Parker and her husband, Charlie, of Canton, Gordon A. MacPhail and Carol Holly of Holliston, Mary-Ellen Hill and her husband, Jim, of FL, and the late Richard A. and William D. Brother of the late Evelyn Haight. Brother-in-law of Arnold Haight of Canton. Also survived by his eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours in the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, Friday, April 4, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral service in the Needham Presbyterian Church, 1458 Great Plain Ave., Needham, on Saturday morning at a time to be announced. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment Canton Corner Cemetery.
