Man About Canton: Open TM is Archaic

By

Did you know …

In MAC’s opinion, Canton’s open town meeting is archaic and inefficient. This is the 21st century, but our method of governing is still stuck in the 17th century. As one politician said, “In today’s fast-paced, over-scheduled world, it is impossible to get enough people to town meeting to represent the broad spectrum of needs and interests in the town of Canton.” Often times, the town meeting is packed with special interest groups voting their specific projects. It is MAC’s position that to ensure the broadest representation of all residents and interests, we should adopt a representative town meeting. It is time to move into the 21st century.

The business is a “grandfathered” commercial use in a single residence zone. Attorney Schneiders went on to say that Canton bylaws also allow the owners to seek zoning board approval to change the nonconforming use to another nonconforming use that is not “substantially more detrimental to the neighborhood.”
