Baseball team climbs to .500 with pair of wins
By Mike BergerA combination of strong pitching and clutch hitting helped propel the Canton High baseball team to consecutive wins last week over Franklin and Milford.
The two wins evened the Bulldogs’ record to 2-2 and gave the team some important momentum in league play during the second week of the season.
On Wednesday, April 9, Canton beat Franklin 4-1 behind a solid outing from sophomore starter Griffin Jerrier, who allowed just two hits and four walks over six innings. Sophomore Kevin Powers came in for the save.
Senior Kevin O’Brien drove in two of the Bulldogs’ runs, and new player Arthur McNally finished 2 for 3 with an RBI. Junior Pat Vartanian also contributed offensively with a hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
The next day, Canton beat Milford 2-1 as senior captain Sam Larson pitched a complete game, giving up four hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Vartanian went 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Tommy Glynn had the game-winning RBI in the seventh. Jerrier also delivered a key hit in a run-scoring rally, and O’Brien and Powers added one hit apiece.
Head coach JP Scott, when asked what the team’s biggest improvements were in the last week, said, “Playing with pride and a sense of urgency — becoming a true team.”
This week’s schedule included road games against Oliver Ames on Monday, Sharon on Wednesday, and Cardinal Spellman on Thursday (today) at 3:30 p.m. Next week, Canton will host Dedham on Tuesday, April 22, at noon and then travel to Foxboro on Wednesday, April 23, at 1 p.m.
