Girls’ tennis team outlasts Franklin, Milford
By Holly EricksonThe CHS girls’ tennis team continued its hot start to the season last week, earning two more wins to improve to 3-1 overall.
In Monday’s home match against Franklin, senior captain Erika Nannery continued her dominance at first singles and easily walked away with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Senior Amberly Diep also nabbed a two-set win at third singles (6-3, 6-3); however, Franklin prevailed at second singles against freshman Emma Sokolovsky and again in the first doubles match against the pairing of senior Pranathi Ganni and junior Cristina Guccione.
The match came down to sophomores Carly Scanlon and Jaclyn Sulkala, and after splitting the first two sets (6-4, 3-6), the duo found their stride and won the final set 6-2.
On Thursday, the Bulldogs hosted Milford, and once again it all came down to the final match of the day. Nannery breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Scanlon and Sulkala won for the second straight match — this time at first doubles with Ganni not in attendance.
Tied 2-2, the Bulldogs turned to Diep, who came up big with a three-set win to seal the match. The highlight for Diep came in the third set, when she used the drop shot against an opponent strong at the baseline to score a 6-0 clinching victory.
Head coach Bill Kates is more than pleased with the play he’s witnessing on a daily basis from his squad. He’s particularly proud of their ability to win such close matches, as he believes it’s the key to a good team.
This week, the Bulldogs were due to play three straight at home: Monday against Oliver Ames, Tuesday against Boston Latin, and Wednesday against Sharon. The team will then host Foxboro next Wednesday before playing seven of its next eight matches on the road.
