Canton High boys’ tennis team tops Quincy for season’s first win
By Holly EricksonFollowing a tough losing streak, the CHS boys’ tennis team clinched its first win of the season in a nonleague match. After falling to 0-6 overall, the boys found their confidence and rhythm against Quincy and secured a win that hopefully will be the first of many for the remainder of the season.
Last week’s play began on Monday, April 14, on the road against Oliver Ames. While the team lost 1-4, the play of sophomore Nathan Maltz at second singles stood out as he pulled off a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win.
“Nathan was the only one to dig deep, find his rhythm and beat his opponent,” said head coach Leo Nelson. “He found a weakness in his opponent and was patient getting the ball back to his opponent and limiting his unforced errors.”
Another away match followed, this time against Sharon on Wednesday, April 16. Unfortunately, the squad was shut out by some of the better players in the state. Senior captain Sam Riemer (1-6, 2-6) and Maltz (0-6, 2-6) played the best of the bunch, but weren’t able to pull off a win.
Despite a rough week and a losing record, things seemed to gel for the team on Friday, April 18. Hosting Quincy, the boys stuck to the fundamentals and were able to come away with a strong 4-1 win.
Riemer led the team with a big win at first singles. Maltz improved his strong record at second singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. At third singles, sophomore Dan Biggers had a huge 6-1, 6-1 win. And for the fourth and final win of the day, first doubles used their strategy to take down their opponent, 6-2, 6-1.
During vacation week, the squad was scheduled to travel to Foxboro on Wednesday, April 23.
