Resident opposes low-income housing measures

By

Dear Editor:

I originally wrote this letter in opposition to the following two warrant articles regarding development of new apartment complexes in Canton; however, the town has since withdrawn these articles. But I still consider the overdevelopment of apartments and condos a major problem in Canton.

The Canton town meeting will be considering two warrant articles regarding low-income housing (code word for Section 8 housing/projects):

The first one, Article 12, would amend the town’s zoning bylaw by inserting a new Inclusionary Zoning section. The purpose is to encourage development of new low-income housing in compliance with Chapter 40B, Section 20-24 and other affordable housing programs developed by the state.

The second one, Article 22, would establish a Canton Housing Trust Fund, whose purpose is to provide for the creation and preservation of low-income housing.

Enough already! Canton has an affordable housing percentage of 12.24 percent — well above the 10 percent threshold required by Chapter 40B. Canton also has more than enough apartment/condo complexes, such as Windsor Woods, Arboretum apartments, and Avalon Bay Communities (Roseland Properties) on the Randolph Line, which will be the largest 40B development. Don’t forget the push for a 350-unit development at the Plymouth Rubber Property and a 160-unit senior housing complex at the AA Will site. Even if any new housing projects are for moderate to high income, if they are not selling, guess what the developer does? Hello Section 8.

There are 1,342 condos and 34 apartment complexes in Canton. If we want the town of Canton to remain as close to a small town as possible, please come out to the town meeting on May 12 and voice your opinion and vote no to the Inclusionary Zoning article and voice your displeasure to our government representatives. Remember, you live in Canton because it’s not Brockton. (All of the data in this letter came from Canton Citizen articles.)

Sincerely,

Paul Broderick
