Girls’ tennis team falls to undefeated Foxboro
By Holly EricksonApril vacation week usually means changes in the lineup — and that was the case for the CHS girls’ tennis team on the afternoon of Thursday, April 24. While the squad was missing a few key players, they still almost managed to pull off a major upset against a talented Foxboro team, which currently leads the Davenport Division at 7-0.
While they ended up losing the match 3-2, the Bulldogs had key wins in first singles and doubles. Undefeated senior captain Erika Nannery started the day off strong with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, while senior Pranathi Ganni and junior Cristina Guccione followed and found their stride in a 6-4, 6-2 win.
While the rest of the day’s matches did not yield any more wins for the Bulldogs, each of the varsity players on the squad played their hearts out and demonstrated the depth and talent of the team. Freshman Emma Sokolovsky maintained her position at second singles, earning the praise of head coach Bill Kates for her strong play and continual progress. Sophomore Tiffany Ha also gained some valuable varsity experience as she stepped in at third singles in place of regular starter Amberly Diep.
With the scored tied at 2-2, the match came down to second doubles. Sophomore Carly Scanlon teamed up with junior Briana Cree and they battled until the very end, losing a hard-fought, back-and-forth match in three sets (4-6, 6-3, 4-6).
Now with a 4-3 record, the girls had a busy week ahead of them with away matches Monday against Stoughton and Wednesday against Taunton, followed by a home match against King Philip on Friday, May 2.
