Boys’ tennis tops Stoughton for season’s 2nd win
By Holly EricksonThe CHS boys’ tennis team earned a split in its two matches last week, beating Stoughton for its second win of the season before falling to King Philip in a lopsided defeat.
On Monday, April 28, the boys played host to the much improved Black Knights and came out on top with a 4-1 victory. Winning in straight sets were senior captain Sam Riemer (6-1, 6-3), sophomore captain Nathan Maltz (6-2, 6-3), and sophomore Dan Biggers (6-0, 6-2).
The fourth and final win of the day came courtesy of sophomore Dylan Wong and senior Peter Harfiel at first doubles. After coming out a bit flat in the first set, the pair charged back in the second and third sets to topple their opponents 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Head coach Leo Nelson has continued to applaud the efforts and dedication of these two players. “[Wong] has been a consistent player this year,” Nelson said. “He is improving each match, and the time he puts in after practice has really shown in his play on the court.”
In regard to Hartfiel, Nelson said he has been a “huge addition to the team,” showing the “cool head and willingness to learn that all coaches want.”
After being rained out last Wednesday, April 30, the Bulldogs traveled to King Philip on Friday and struggled against an experienced and talented Warriors team, losing 5-0.
“Experience on the court proved to be the winner of the match,” Nelson observed. “Having all seniors, experience and cool heads on the court put us on the losing side.”
Nelson did, however, praise the fight in both Biggers and Riemer, who respectively lost their matches 3-6, 3-6 and 2-6, 6-4, 5-7.
This week, the Bulldogs were due to play four home matches in five days, with Mansfield coming to town on Monday, followed by Taunton on Tuesday, Milford on Wednesday, and Oliver Ames on Friday, May 9.
