Playoff-bound girls’ lax team picks up 2 more W’s
By Jay TurnerThe playoffs are almost here, and the CHS girls’ lacrosse team has gotten back to its winning ways after a midseason losing streak.
Last week, the girls made it three in a row and cemented their grip on second place in the Davenport Division with back-to-back wins over Oliver Ames and Milford.
On Monday, the Bulldogs welcomed OA on senior night, and after falling behind 2-0 they clawed their way back and went on to win 14-10 behind big games from captain Jackie Merrigan (4 goals) and Sam Sullivan (3 goals).
Junior Mary McNeil and sophomore Mary Nee also had big games for Canton, combining for five goals, while senior captain Shannon Proctor and senior Kellie Stigas chipped in with one goal apiece.
The Bulldog defense also played well in the victory, led by seniors Becca Wysocki and Caitlyn Albert as well as Jackie Martin, Julia Mackie, and freshman goalie Katherine Doody, who had one of her finest performances of the season in net.
“Katherine continues to get better and people are surprised when they learn that she’s a freshman,” said head coach Chris Murtagh. “She’s turned a lot of heads this season, from coaches to officials to other players.”
Murtagh was also happy to see all of the seniors playing together — both at the start and end of the game — and they all contributed to the winning effort, including Alex Dillon, Caitlyn Feeney, Chessie Kenefick, Liz Korykansky, Sam Nolte, and Zoe Rosenberg.
Later in the week, the Bulldogs traveled to Milford and earned a solid 15-10 win — their second of the season against the Hawks.
Canton dominated the draws and generally controlled the pace of play, led by junior Christine Ward, who had a team-high four goals and has been a “real consistent player all season,” according to Murtagh.
Sullivan finished with three goals in the victory, and Caitlin Hutchinson and McNeil each had two. Proctor and Stigas chipped in with one each for the second straight game.
Several young players also saw action in the game, and a few more are expected to join the varsity team this week, including sophomore Olivia Devoe and freshman Tessa Cudmore.
Having already clinched a playoff berth, the Bulldogs were hoping to use their final two games this week as a tuneup for the south sectional tournament. Both games were scheduled for earlier this week at home, with first-place Foxboro coming to town on Monday followed by nonleague Apponequet on Tuesday.
