Thornton, Joseph P.
By Canton CitizenJoseph P. Thornton Sr., 85, a longtime resident of Canton, passed away Monday, May 19, at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Boston and raised in Quincy, Joe graduated from BC High and Boston College. Lieutenant Thornton served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict with the 82nd Airborn, Triple Nickel 555, earning the United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Parachute Medal, Air Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. Mr. Thornton worked for Reynolds Aluminum as the regional sales manager before retiring in 1992.
Joe was an avid golfer and a member of the Wampatuck Country Club for 53 years, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed traveling and was a dedicated family man. Beloved husband of 61 years to Jeanne V. (Pickering). Loving father of Joseph P. Jr. and his wife, Denise, John A. and his wife, Jane, all of Canton, and James C. and his wife, Rosemarie, of Plymouth. Brother of Marie Harte of Quincy. Grandfather of James Thornton Jr., Michael Thornton, Jillian Bilodeau, Thomas Thornton, Jeffrey Thornton, Colleen Thornton, Daniel Thornton, Richard Thornton, Joseph Thornton III, Elaine Thornton, Christine Thornton, Lisa Thornton and Stephen Thornton. He had 10 1/2 great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours in the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington St., Thursday, May 22, 4-8 p.m. Funeral mass in St. Gerard Majella Church Friday morning at 10. Burial Canton Corner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Canton Veterans Service Department, 801 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021, or to “Our Neighbors in Need” c/o St. Gerard Majella Church, 1860 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.
