Baseball team misses playoffs after 0-3 week
By Mike BergerThe CHS baseball team lost three consecutive games last week, ending the regular season with an 8-12 record and falling out of contention for a playoff spot. All three of the Bulldogs’ losses came on the road — to Stoughton 5-1, Sharon 3-0, and Cardinal Spellman 2-1 in extra innings.
In the last game of the season against Cardinal Spellman, senior Sam Larson got the start and threw five innings, giving up a single unearned run. He allowed only three hits and struck out four, but the offense couldn’t stake him to a lead. Larson had the sole RBI for the Bulldogs, tying the game in the fifth inning.
Sophomore Sean Doyle came on in relief of Larson and allowed only three hits through four and two-thirds innings, but Spellman came through with the deciding run in the 10th. Doyle finished with three strikeouts and two walks.
Sophomore Griffin Jerrier scored the only Bulldog run and hit safely in five of his final six games of the season. Sophomore Joe Peccia came off the bench to contribute two hits, finishing the season with a .333 average. Larson also had a strong finish at the plate, hitting safely in eight of his final nine games as a Bulldog.
In the 3-0 loss to Sharon, the Bulldogs couldn’t get the offense going, striking out nine times in the game. Sophomore Kevin Powers pitched a complete game, striking out six and walking none while giving up three earned runs over six innings.
Senior Wyatt Golledge was the lone bright spot for the Bulldog offense, contributing two hits. Larson had the other Bulldog hit.
In the 5-1 loss to Stoughton, Larson had two hits while junior Pat Vartanian had a hit and scored a run. Senior Kevin O’Brien had two hits with an RBI, and Jerrier had a hit and drew a walk.
Golledge got the start and pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits over six innings. It was his second start of the year and both were complete games.
The Bulldogs’ last two wins of the season came a week earlier against Foxboro 7-1 and Sharon 5-4.
In the Foxboro game, Powers got the start and struck out seven over his seven innings of work. The Bulldogs had a hit in every inning and ended with 13 hits on the day. O’Brien scored two runs and had two hits, while Vartanian had three hits and two RBIs. Peccia, Jerrier, and Joe Bires each had two hits, and senior Tom Glynn had a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning.
In the win over Sharon, Larson gave up two earned runs over seven innings while striking out six. Vartanian reached base in all four plate appearances, with two walks and two singles, scoring twice and adding an RBI. Golledge, Powers, and Jerrier added two hits apiece.
