Nannery wraps up stellar career with tourney win
By Holly EricksonThe CHS girls’ tennis team closed out the 2014 campaign with a 10-9 record, following a tough loss to Duxbury in the first round of the state tournament.
Senior captain Erika Nannery concluded her CHS tennis career with another impressive shutout at first singles. Nannery, who hasn’t lost a single match in the Hockomock League this season — or the previous one for that matter — was once again named MVP of the league.
Nannery’s win against Duxbury was the only one of the day, as the strength of the Dragons’ players was abundantly evident. Freshman Emma Sokolovsky and senior Amberly Diep rounded out singles play with respective 2-6, 0-6 and 0-6, 0-6 losses. On the positive side, Diep’s consistent hard work and impressive play throughout the season earned her an All-Hockomock honorable mention.
In the doubles matches, senior Pranathi Ganni and junior Cristina Guccione couldn’t keep up with their competitors and fell 1-6, 2-6, while sophomore duo Carly Scanlon and Jaclyn Sulkala also lost in straight sets, 1-6, 1-6.
Coach Bill Kates reflected back on a solid season for his girls. “I’m very happy with our 10-9 record,” he said. “We had a freshman at second singles, which in itself is noteworthy. All in all, I’m very proud of our squad and I’m already looking forward to next year.”
