Girls’ track has solid showing at sectionals

By

The CHS girls’ track team wrapped up the 2014 season on Saturday as several team members competed in the Division 3 sectionals held in Pembroke.

“We had pretty good results in Pembroke,” said head coach Dan Ashman. “The times and distances may not look great, but almost every girl finished better than where they were seeded on one of the windiest days of track I have ever seen.”

The 4×100 relay team of Masha Smirnova, Selena Cho, Tamara Auguste, and Rachel Campagna scored the team’s only point with an eighth-place finish.

Senior Amanda Eagles had a personal-best mark in the two-mile, and sophomore Catherine Song had an outdoor personal best in the mile. Sam Koplik also posted solid times in both the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.

Cho, a freshman, missed the finals in the 100 by one-hundredth of a second. She also missed the finals in the triple jump by one place.

Campagna came up one place short of qualifying for the finals in the long jump.

The 4×400 relay (Campagna, Hayley Mulford, Jenn Dever, Michaela Kelly) ran their best time of the year, and the 4×800 (Roni Polsgrove, Song, Eagles, Olivia Stevens) also ran well.

Two members of the boys’ track team also qualified for sectionals but did not compete. Liam Collins missed the meet because he was at a national math competition with the CHS math team, and senior Somto Ofonagoro sat out due to a foot injury.
