Over two days last week, Canton firefighters battled a dumpster fire at the United Church of Christ on Washington Street and an oven fire inside the Sika Sarnafil building on Dan Road.

In each case a Canton firefighter sustained minor injuries, but both men have since returned to work.

Firefighters were called to the dumpster fire shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3. The 30-yard dumpster contained asphalt shingles and was adjacent to the church building. Lt. Greg Woodbury said the fire caused damage to the windows and interior of the church; however, the building was still operational.

In all 17 firefighters battled the fire, with assistance from the Stoughton and Norwood fire departments. Firefighters cleared the scene just before 2 a.m. on June 4.

Approximately 10 hours later, firefighters responded to an oven fire at Sika Sarnafil. When firefighters arrived, they found that the building’s CO2 fire protection system had doused the flames. Firefighters treated the remaining smoldering fire, ventilated the building, and overhauled the oven. Damage was contained to the oven, and the building was evacuated for about 45 minutes. Eight Canton firefighters responded and left the scene around 1:30 p.m.
