Letter to the Editor: Greenlodge Street Parking Problems
By GuestEditor’s note: The following letter was originally addressed to the Board of Selectmen and is being reprinted at the request of the author.
Dear Editor:
This is to voice my extreme disappointment and frustration with the decision to employ a flat-rate fee for parking on the public way of Greenlodge Street near the 128 commuter rail station.
I have lived in Canton for 29 years and purchased my home, in part, based upon the proximity of public transportation. I live less than two miles from the 128 commuter rail station. I work in Boston. Most mornings I get a ride from my husband to the station and I get picked up at the end of the day. However, there are a few times when my husband works out of town and I have to drive myself to the train station and park in order to get to my job. The frequency is variable. I may need to park two days a month, or I may need to park 12 days per month.
Either way, the fee of $130 for a three-month parking sticker is ridiculously high to park on a public way. Where else in Canton does this town charge for parking on a public street?
There absolutely needs to be a way for those of us who do not park there five days a week, every week, using the same vehicle every day, to use our commuter station paying fees that correspond to actual usage. A solution for those of us who need per diem parking has to be considered. I am not the only person who will be so adversely affected. I have heard from many people about this, as I am sure you have as well, at this point!
Limiting parking to only those who need it every day and on a very routine basis is an extreme disservice to every citizen of Canton, especially those of us who live at the northern end of town. It is a shame that so little thought was put into this decision — in a bid to enhance a grab for money, at the expense of the voting and taxpaying citizens of Canton!
Please consider allowing parking vouchers for per diem use. This is the only fair and just thing to do for those of us who need public transportation on a variable basis.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Janet Whitley
