On Wednesday, July 23, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) officially marked the opening of the new Lt. Arthur E. Farnham and Sgt. Thomas M. Connolly Memorial Park — a six-acre passive recreation park located at the former Canton Airport site off Neponset Street.

Named in honor of two local WWII heroes and friends, the new state park abuts the Neponset River and surrounding wetlands and features a 30-car parking lot, scenic overlooks, a shade pavilion, a loop trail, interpretive signage, and extensive native plantings. The project, which involved the remediation of contaminated soil, cost nearly $8 million and took several years to complete.

Attendees at last week’s dedication included Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Maeve Vallely Bartlett, DCR Commissioner Jack Murray, and Representative Bill Galvin, as well as Canton selectmen and members of the Connolly family. The late Paul Seery of Canton was also honored for his role in the naming of the new park.
