CCT presents The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
By GuestThe Canton Community Theatre, established in 2002, continues its summer tradition of putting on high end theatrical productions with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
The two-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy (2005) was conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin, and additional material by Jay Reiss.
The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. It’s about six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves. They learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. Time magazine calls it the “joy of nerdiness.”
The director, Renee Hanscom, has spent countless hours putting the cast through rehearsals since early June. Besides Canton, the actors represent local towns such as Walpole and Randolph, to name a few.
Showtimes are August 1-2 and 7-9 at 8 p.m. at the Village Shoppes at Cobb’s Corner, 95 Washington Street (next to the Shoe Dept. and across from the Halfway Café). Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased at www.cantoncommunitytheatre.org or at the door. For further information, please contact cantoncommunitytheatre@gmail.com.
* Show material may not be suitable for children under the age of 14.
