Matt Kelley chosen for A Shot for Life Challenge
By Mike BergerRecent Canton High graduate and basketball all star Matt Kelley has been selected to participate in the prestigious A Shot for Life Challenge, which raises funds and awareness for brain cancer research.
The second annual event will take place at the University Sports Complex in Hanover on Saturday, August 2. The A Shot for Life Challenge is a one-of-a-kind shooting competition that is open exclusively to the best shooters in the state of Massachusetts as chosen by a selection committee.
The money raised by all of the ASFL shooters goes to brain cancer research at both Children’s Hospital in Boston as well as the Dr. Curry Research Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital.
“We are extremely proud of all of the new members of our A Shot for Life family and we’re very happy to welcome all of our still eligible shooters back from last year,” said A Shot for Life founder and CEO Mike Slonina. “All of these tremendous young athletes have made the decision to use their extraordinary talent to raise money for brain cancer research, which speaks volumes about them as people.”
The winner of the challenge gets placed in the A Shot for Life Hall of Fame and has their jersey number retired for all future ASFL events.
Kelley is one of 16 south shore players selected for the team. He was named a first-team Hockomock League all star in 2014 and was one of the league’s best three-point shooters. He averaged 14.3 points per game — including a season-high 33 points against Milford — and finished with a superlative three-point average of 40 percent. At 5’10”, he averaged four rebounds per game and was second on the team with 1.7 steals per game while averaging 76 percent at the free-throw line.
