Canton High honors legacies of father & son
By Mike BergerCanton remembered the legacies of William (Bill) Cravens Sr. and his son Billy Cravens with special ceremonies prior to Friday night’s football scrimmage at Memorial Field between CHS and Southeastern Regional Vo-Tech.
Cravens Sr., who passed away in March, was a longtime Bulldogs fan who attended countless games over the past several decades.
His son Billy, who passed away in April due to complications from ALS, was a standout halfback for the Bulldogs in the mid 1970s and a longtime employee of the Canton Recreation Department.
According to CHS Athletic Director Danny Erickson, “Bill [Sr.] was the most committed of all CHS athletic fans, attending hundreds of contests annually. You would know the contest had been decided when Bill got up to go with his seat in hand. Billy was a phenomenal football player in the 1970s and he dedicated his professional life in giving back to the town’s young athletes.”
A silver backing of a chair was permanently installed just under the press box to memorialize the decades of support Cravens Sr. showed to athletes and fellow fans. Immediately following the unveiling of the chair, attention shifted to the field, where more than 100 Bulldog athletes gathered to participate in a massive ice bucket challenge in memory of Billy Cravens. The Bulldogs have challenged the rest of the Hockomock League schools to do the same to help strike out ALS.
The football scrimmage followed with Canton dominating Southeastern. The Bulldogs will begin the season at Bishop Feehan this coming Friday night, September 5, at 7 p.m.
