Canton, Brockton PD nab burglary suspect
By Mike BergerCanton police combined efforts last week with Brockton police to make an arrest in connection with a recent rash of housebreaks that have occurred over the past few weeks in Canton.
Anthony Brown, 53, of Brockton, is being held on nearly $100,000 bail after his arraignment Monday. He was arrested at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, September 5, and charged with two counts of breaking and entering into a building (nighttime), two counts possession of burglarious instruments, and two counts of malicious destruction of property over $250.
Detective Sgt. Jim Quigley said Brown was arrested for burglaries on Spring Lane and Shore Drive and is a suspect in other break-ins in the Cedarcrest Road and Wentworth Road areas.
Around 8 p.m. Friday evening, patrol units were dispatched to a Shore Drive residence where the homeowner returned to find someone inside his home. One night earlier, a homeowner on Spring Lane had reported a similar incident in which the suspect came in through a bathroom window and fled on a bicycle.
Over the course of the day on Friday, detectives developed information that a brownish/gold Nissan Murano registered to a Brockton man may have been involved in the Thursday break-in on Spring Lane.
Immediately following the Shore Drive break-in, a description of that vehicle and license plate was broadcast over area-wide police radio networks. A short time later, officers and detectives from the Brockton Police Department reported that they had located the suspect’s vehicle. Canton units responded to the scene, where they located items that had been stolen only an hour earlier from the Shore Drive residence as well as the bicycle that the suspect reportedly used to flee the scene.
Quigley said police also recovered some stolen coins and clothing from Brown’s home after obtaining a search warrant.
