Volleyball continues Hock dominance with 2 more W’s

With two more straight-set wins last week against Oliver Ames and Milford, the CHS varsity volleyball team became the last undefeated team still standing in the Hockomock League, upping its season-long winning streak against league competition to 18 sets and counting.

Continuing on their quest for perfection with equal parts offensive and defensive brilliance, the Bulldogs have now faced six Hock opponents and have beaten all six by a 3-0 final score. They also have a win against nonleague Duxbury — a reigning Division 2 south sectional finalist — and enter play this week as the No. 9 team in the Boston Globe Top 20 poll.

Last Tuesday against OA, the girls started fast and never let up, cruising past the second-place Tigers 25-13, 25-14, 25-16.

In the first two sets, Canton relied on excellent serving from captains Elizabeth Hamilton (7 aces) and Danielle Arthur (6 aces), while fellow captain Erin Proctor once again ran the offense with precision, collecting 12 assists and four kills. Hamilton also produced a team-high seven kills, and Rye Verille had what coach Pat Cawley described as her “best offensive match of the season” with four big kills. In the third set, Nicole Poole ran the offense well while Emma Gobbi and Emma Murphy both did a nice job in the middle.

Two days later against Milford, the Bulldogs had another strong showing at home, winning 28-13, 25-8, and 25-22.

“The entire team once again contributed to this win,” noted Cawley, who had success with every combination she used.

Hamilton, Proctor, Verille, Olivia Devoe, Chidera Nwankwo, and Sarah Reissfelder led the way early with a combined 21 kills and eight aces. Kim Frazier (7 kills) and Julia Mackie (3 kills) also had big matches for Canton, and Poole had another strong performance at setter, finishing with nine assists and 3 aces.

Other key contributors included Kaitlin McCarthy, who continued her strong serving and good defense; Desire Pickney, who played strong at the net; and Ariana Sanusi and Erika Lum, who played aggressive defense. Julia Panico also had a strong defensive performance in her first varsity attempt at libero.

“Although we have many areas in which we need to improve, the girls are playing steady, inspired ball,” said Cawley late last week. “They are focused and hard working. We hope to keep this going as we host Stoughton on Tuesday.”

Following the Stoughton match, the Bulldogs will travel to Sharon next Tuesday and Attleboro next Thursday before returning to home court to face a strong Franklin team on Monday, October 6.
