Cross country teams top Milford for season’s first win
By Mike BergerIt was a great week for both CHS cross country teams as the boys won their first meet in two years — a 22-34 road victory over Milford — while the girls earned their first win of the season, beating Milford 21-40.
The boys were led by senior Spencer Polsgrove, who finished first overall with a time of 17:20, followed closely by junior Courtland Priest, who finished second in 17:21. Polsgrove and Priest were followed by seniors Danny Brooks, fifth, 18:19; Caleb Morrison, sixth, 18:31; and Andrew Moy, eighth, 18:52. The Bulldogs’ other top runners were senior Brian Rota (19:47) and freshman Andrew Salvatori (20:01).
Head coach David Hiltz said the close competition between Polsgrove and Priest has been beneficial to the team.
“Courtland has picked up where he left off last year and is looking at a chance for All-States in November,” Hiltz said. “Spencer has emerged as a top runner as well. Spencer has always shown the ability, but this year he has really taken it seriously and is committed to being a top runner. The pair push each other in practice as well as meets, and it is an awesome thing to watch.”
Hiltz also noted the improvement of the team’s younger runners, including Salvatori, junior Noah Healy, and freshman Matt Floyd.
In the girls’ win, junior Catherine Song won the 3.1-mile race in 19:16, followed by senior Julia Guerini, who placed third in 21:09, and sophomore Olivia Stevens, who finished fourth in 22:11. Canton’s other top runners were junior Sam Koplik (23:42) and freshman Maggie Dunn (24:17). Also running in the top seven for the girls were junior Erin Martin (24:18) and sophomore Sophia Argus (25:45).
Both teams were set to host Stoughton on September 30 and Foxboro October 7 at 3:45 p.m. Both teams will also participate in the Reebok/Canton Road Race, scheduled for Sunday, October 5, at Reebok headquarters.
