BOS approves Chapman Street redesign with traffic light
By Mike BergerThe Board of Selectmen on Tuesday night voted to move forward with a planned redesign of the Chapman Street/Washington Street intersection, which will include a “smart” traffic light, elimination of the small island at the beginning of Chapman Street, new pedestrian lights, and widened shoulders for bicyclists.
The cost of the project is estimated at roughly $300,000 and will be paid for out of the selectmen’s mitigation account coming from the settlement of the University Station mixed-use development. The design of the project by Vanasse & Associates will also be paid for by the University Station developer.
Jonathan Rockwell, representing Vanasse & Associates, and traffic consultant Gary McMahon said the project will begin in the spring of 2015 and last several weeks.
Selectmen Chairman Victor Del Vecchio, who is a Chapman Street resident and met informally with residents and abutters, said the project is “long overdue.”
“Traffic has gotten worse over the years and the road is much more dangerous,” he said.
Liz Parker, who lives halfway down Chapman Street, said that traffic in the morning backs up all the way to Spring Lane as vehicles wait to take a left-hand turn onto Washington Street.
Rockwell said the new light will measure traffic volume and will be synchronized with the Dedham/Washington Street light. He said the redesign of the intersection will make it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists. A lane will be added for vehicles making a right-hand turn onto Washington Street. Also, the entrance and exit to Cassie’s Corner Store, which is located at the intersection, will be more defined.
