The CHS girls varsity soccer team had its best week of the season, scoring nine goals in two games en route to beating Sharon 4-0 and Attleboro 5-0 last week at home. In the Sharon game on September 30, Tessa Cudmore led the way with two goals while Sarah MacQuarrie and Hailee Duserick added one goal apiece. All three girls also got on the scoreboard on Thursday against Attleboro, along with teammate Hannah Link. Defensively, the Bulldogs looked sharp in both games as goalie Kathryn Doody earned a solo shutout against Sharon and split the duties against Attleboro with Grace Lehane.

“Both were similar games,” said head coach Kate Howarth. “What I saw improvement in was finishing chances and taking advantage of our opportunities. I told the team not to worry about playoffs or future games but to concentrate on one game at a time — the game at hand.”

Canton (4-4-2) was due to travel to Franklin on Monday, followed by home games against Taunton on Wednesday and Norwood on Saturday, October 11, starting at 4 p.m.

Boys soccer hoping to rebound after 3-game skid

The CHS boys soccer team was hoping to find its way back into the win column this week after dropping three in a row and losing its grip on the top spot in the ultra-competitive Hockomock Davenport Division.

Last week, the Bulldogs lost a tough one at Sharon, surrendering four straight goals after jumping out to a 2-0 lead. The team also lost at Attleboro 3-1 last Thursday, followed by a 1-0 heartbreaker against Franklin — the first-place team in the Kelley-Rex Division — earlier this week at home. The Bulldogs slid all the way to fifth place at 4-4-2; however, they remain in the thick of the race with only four standings points separating the top five teams. The boys were due to get back in action on Wednesday at Taunton, followed by a home game Saturday night against nonleague Norwood.

In other team news, senior captain Damian Kozak is currently tied for second in the Hockomock League with 13 points (10 goals, 3 assists), and veteran head coach Danny Erickson will be inducted into the Eastern Mass. Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame at halftime of the Norwood game in recognition of an outstanding 20-plus year career.
