Golfers beat top 2 teams in Hock large division
By Canton CitizenThe CHS golf team improved to 9-3 with two home wins against a pair of strong opponents in the Hockomock’s Kelley-Rex (Large School) Division. Three members of the team also competed in the Hockomock League individual championships held at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton.
The Bulldogs’ two wins last week came against Franklin 159-170 and Mansfield 155-168. Top scorers in the Franklin match were Brian Halloran and Luke Thompson, who both shot a 39, followed by Mike Breviglia (40) and Steve Gorham (41).
“Our three senior captains continue to play well and contribute to our top four scores,” said head coach Mike Barucci. “Franklin was 9-2 coming into the match and at the top of the Kelley-Rex Division. It was a big win for us against a strong team.”
In the Mansfield win, Halloran and Gorham tied for the lowest score of the day with a 37, followed by Thompson (40) and Jim Jenkins (41). According to Barucci, Gorham, a junior, has been improving all season and came in with his best ever match score.
“It was great to see Steve finally break through and have such a great round,” Barucci said. “I look for him to continue to post low scores. [Jenkins] has also been steadily improving and came in with another low score to help us win.
Mansfield was 9-3 coming into the match and went on to win the Kelley-Rex division due to a subsequent Franklin loss. “We had two big statement wins at home against two of the top teams in the league last week,” said Barucci.
On Friday, October 10, Blue Hill CC hosted the Hockomock League Championship, an 18-hole match featuring three of the best golfers from each team. Barucci said Canton did not play its best golf and finished fifth overall, with Oliver Ames taking the team title. Breviglia shot an 84 on the par-72 course and finished tied for seventh in the individual competition. Halloran shot an 89 while Thompson shot a 90.
Canton was due to wrap up the regular season this week with an away match against Taunton and a home match against Stoughton.
