Update: The Canton High field hockey team knocked off No. 23 Dartmouth 3-0 at home Thursday night in the opening round of the Division 1 south sectional tournament. The red-hot Bulldogs will now travel to North Attleboro to face the seventh seeded Red Rocketeers on Saturday, November 1, at noon. The two Hockomock League teams last squared off in the regular season opener way back on September 4, with the Bulldogs winning 4-2. The winner of Saturday’s rematch will advance to the quarterfinals to face either No. 2 Oliver Ames (13-0-3) or No. 18 New Bedford (10-7-2).

With three straight shutout victories in its last three regular season games and winners of seven of eight overall, the CHS field hockey team will open postseason play tonight as one of the hottest teams in Division 1 south.

Seeded No. 10 in a 23-team field, the Bulldogs (12-4-2) will take on No. 23 Dartmouth in a preliminary round matchup starting at 5 p.m. at Memorial Field. The winner will move on to play No. 7 North Attleboro (13-3-2), one of six Hockomock League schools competing in the D1 tournament.

Two weeks ago, Canton went toe to toe with the No. 2 seed, Oliver Ames, in a one-goal loss, and also competed hard in a 2-1 defeat against No. 3 Norwood back on September 20. Last week, the Bulldogs finished strong as they knocked off both Stoughton and Westwood on the road 2-0 before dispatching Sharon 4-0 at home on senior night.

Goal scorers in the Sharon win included senior captain Jackie Martin, who also had two assists, senior Kelsey Trerice, junior Lindsey Nolte, and freshman Andrea McNeil. Scoring in their previous wins were sophomore Caroline Hagan, senior captain Mary McNeil, Nolte, and junior Masha Smirnova.

On senior night, Canton paid tribute to its eight hardworking seniors: Martin, McNeil, Trerice, Jenna Columbo, Piper Conway, Julianna Howlett, Marissa Pati, and goalie Abbey Mitcheroney.

The Bulldogs will look to extend their season with a big win tonight, October 30. Admission to the MIAA tournament game is $6 for adults and $4 for students/senior citizens.
