Red-hot girls soccer qualifies for D2 south playoffs
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls soccer team won its last three regular season games to qualify for the state tournament with a 9-6-2 record. Playoff seedings will be announced Friday and games will likely begin Sunday or Monday.
The Bulldogs were quite impressive in their play last week, beating Milford 3-0 and Stoughton 2-0 at home, followed by a dominating 5-0 road win over Sharon Monday afternoon.
The Canton offense continues to improve with several different scorers emerging, but most impressive has been the defense led by goalie Kathryn Doody. In a span of 12 games since September 23, Canton has allowed only six goals, including just one in the seven games since October 8.
Scoring goals in the wins over Milford and Stoughton were Sarah McQuarrie (2), Meaghan Hunter, and Hailee and Riley Duserick. Against Sharon, Hailee Duserick finished with a hat trick while Tessa Cudmore and Hannah Link added one goal apiece. Prior to the game, Canton honored its nine seniors: Hailee Duserick, Kelly O’Brien, Christie Ward, Sarah Sestito, Caitlin Hutchinson, Samantha Campbell, Caitlyn Mitten, Grace Barrera, and Katrina Agnitti.
Head coach Kate Howarth said the team is entering the playoffs with a good frame of mind and good momentum. “We needed three points with three games left, and the girls showed their mental toughness,” she said. “What has improved is the team’s willingness to come out strong, take advantage of scoring opportunities and finish. Since the second half of the year, everyone has bought into what we are trying to do and we are in a good spot now.”
