Volleyball advances to D2 central sectional semis
By Jay TurnerUpdate: The Canton High volleyball team had its championship hopes dashed by No. 3 Hopkinton Wednesday night, losing 3-0 at home in the central sectional semifinals. The Bulldogs finish the season at 19-2 overall.
After tearing through its regular season schedule with 18 wins in 19 tries, the CHS varsity volleyball team returned to the Division 2 playoffs this week and promptly held serve against No. 7 Milton, winning 3-0 at home to advance to the central sectional semifinals for a fourth consecutive season.
The second-seeded Bulldogs (19-1), who entered the tournament as one of the favorites to win it all, were scheduled to face No. 3 Hopkinton (18-2) at CHS last night, with the winner advancing to the sectional finals to play either top-seeded Groton-Dunstable (19-1) or No. 5 Westborough (16-4).
Fortunately, Canton has plenty of big-game experience to draw from, having advanced to the sectional championship game in each of the past two years — and winning it in 2012.
Last Monday, the Bulldogs wrapped up regular season play with an impressive 3-0 win (25-15, 25-23, 25-16) over nonleague Quincy — the No. 4 seed in this year’s Division 1 central/east tournament. Senior captain Erin Proctor had another monster performance for the home team, racking up 31 assists and reaching 1,000 for her career midway through the second set.
“She is the first since stats have been officially kept at CHS to reach this milestone,” head coach Pat Cawley said of Proctor, who also had two kills and two aces. “The match was stopped and Erin was presented a memento of this occasion. We are all so proud of her.”
Other top performers against Quincy included junior captain Elizabeth Hamilton (10 kills, 3 aces) and seniors Chidera Nwankwo (8 kills, 5 blocks) and Julia Mackie (5 kills).
