Inaugural Bill Curry softball tourney a big success
By Canton CitizenOn Saturday, October 11, a group of local softball enthusiasts braved the cold and rainy weather to take part in the inaugural Bill Curry Memorial Softball Tournament, a six-team, single-elimination competition held at Devoll and Fallon fields.
Organized by Bill Curry Jr. and Paul Casey, the tournament celebrated the legacy of Curry — a longtime Canton Little League coach and avid softball player — while also raising money for a college scholarship to benefit a CHS graduate. The six teams were managed by Curry Jr., Russ Doherty, Tyler Grogan, Pat McCloud, Greg Lyons, and Kyle Yasi, with Team McCloud claiming the championship.
“The tournament slogan is ‘Pay it Forward,’ a motivational concept that my father strongly believed in,” said Curry Jr. “He loved softball almost as much as he loved his family and giving back to the community.”
Curry Jr. said everyone had a “great time” and their participation meant a lot to his family. He wanted to give a special thanks to Lyons for providing refreshments; the tournament umpires, Paul Casey, Wayman Lee, Mike Jiles, Dan Sides, Jack Veo, Andy Harmon, and Curt Snow; and the Canton Recreation Department for their assistance.
