Letter: New rotary a ‘disaster waiting to happen’

By

Dear Editor:

I have lived in Canton Park Condominiums on Pine Street (next to the convenience store) since 2006. In all this time, I have never had to wait at the stop sign at the corner of Bolivar and Pleasant streets more than a minute or two. I have never seen an accident at the intersection. Crossing the road (from the Devoll Field side, to get to the sidewalk continuing down Pleasant towards the Luce school) was easy. There was a simple but attractive planting area at the intersection.

And now? Despite opposition from nearly everyone except the town selectmen, we have a monstrosity they’re calling a rotary. I invite the selectmen to stand on the corner of Bolivar and Pleasant for five minutes during morning or evening rush hour. Instead of the few people waiting patiently to get onto Pleasant Street, we have dozens of cars in each direction coming to a near halt to yield for the one car in the rotary. Given that most of the rotary is only one lane wide, and that most people who learned how to drive in Massachusetts believe using a turn signal is a sign of weakness, to say this rotary is a disaster waiting to happen is putting it mildly. I dread the day when a distracted driver, so busy trying to get through the mess, fails to notice the pedestrian attempting to cross the road. Someone is going to get killed.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent creating a problem where no problem existed. I can’t help but wonder if someone was lining their pockets while pushing for this ridiculous “solution” to a problem no one in the neighborhood believes existed.
