Coming off a memorable 2013-14 campaign that ended on the brink of a south sectional title, the CHS boys ice hockey team heads into a new season with championship aspirations and the talent to make it happen.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs wasted little time in entering the win column as they knocked off a talented Quincy team 3-1 on the road in the season opener. Just days earlier, the Presidents had picked up their first win of the season against fellow Davenport Division contender Oliver Ames, but the Bulldogs presented an entirely different challenge, led by the top forward line of junior captain John Femia, junior Matt Lazaro, and sophomore newcomer Shaun Kirby.

Kirby, a Catholic Memorial transfer, scored twice in his debut, including the game’s first goal just 30 seconds into the opening period. Lazaro, coming off a breakout 40-point season, added a power play goal early in the second period, while Femia finished with a pair of assists in the win.

“We played really well; it was a great start to the year,” said head coach Brian Shuman. “We really did control the game right from the drop of the puck.”

Shuman said this year’s team should be exciting to watch and certainly has enough “firepower up front,” with the aforementioned top three along with senior captain Brian Hagan. Defensively, the team is still a bit young and unproven; however, the foundation is strong behind senior captain Tyler Murphy, returning junior goalie Justin Slocum, and sophomore Jackson Maffeo.

The Bulldogs will play two more games before the start of the holiday break, and both will present big challenges: a road tilt with rival Franklin on Saturday and their first home game on Tuesday, December 23, against nonleague Beverly — the reigning Division 2 state champions.
